Peer-to-Peer

Learn about our peer-to-peer support

Our Peer-to-Peer programme offers facilitated friendship, bringing together families who have received Home-Start support to share guidance, practical advice, and encouragement. Parents who have previously received support can give back as “Buddies,” using their own experiences to help others navigate similar challenges. With accessible preparation and support, including childcare to remove barriers, the programme fosters confidence, connection, and inclusion. Families gain opportunities to get involved in their wider community, explore volunteering, or take steps towards work and personal goals, empowering them to build lasting networks and a brighter future for themselves and their children. In supporting others and being supported themselves, families strengthen both their own well-being and the wider community

“I thought I’d be helping another mum, but it’s been a two-way experience—I’ve learned so much from her. It’s really helped me grow and build confidence in myself.”

From Isolation to Empowerment

Nadia’s Story: From Isolation to Empowerment (Cardiff pic)

When Nadia arrived in the UK, she hoped to build a safe and happy life. But after experiencing domestic abuse and facing immigration challenges, she found herself alone, pregnant, and sleeping on a friend’s floor. With no access to public funds and limited support, Nadia was relocated to Watford, where she felt isolated and overwhelmed.

After the birth of her baby, Nadia was referred to Home-Start. She was matched with a volunteer who visited weekly, helping her build confidence, navigate appointments, and connect with local groups and services. Together, they attended baby groups and church, and Nadia began to feel less alone. With support from Home-Start and partner charities, she was able to furnish her flat and create a safe space for her and her child.

As Nadia’s confidence grew, she joined our Peer 2 Peer programme, where she was matched with a Buddy—another parent who had received support from Home-Start. Their friendship helped Nadia feel understood and encouraged. She began attending groups regularly and enjoying time outdoors with her child.

Inspired by her journey, Nadia trained to become a Peer 2 Peer Buddy herself. She now supports another family each week, offering the same kindness and encouragement she once received.

“Home-Start were so kind and supportive—always going the extra mile for me. My volunteer was like a borrowed mum when I didn’t have one. She changed my life.”
