Learn about our home visiting support

We work with you to build on your strength and give you the support you tell us you need. Home-Start can help any mum, dad or carer with a child under five for any reason. This might include:

“Just knowing my volunteer was coming once a week really helped. She listened and understood so I didn’t feel alone. She brought activities for the children which they loved, but it also gave me a much needed break too.”

Regular volunteer visits

A Home-Start volunteer will visit you regularly, usually once a week for two to three hours, and offer:

Friendly support through difficult times for as long as needed
Understanding that problems are not unusual
Reassurance that you are not alone
A listening ear and a shoulder to cry on
An extra pair of hands to help you cope with everyday situations

Who are the volunteers?

Home-Start volunteers are people from different backgrounds and vary in age, but all have parenting experience. They:

Will visit you in your home and accept you as you are
Are carefully selected for their friendliness, practical approach and understanding
Have completed a preparation course before being matched to families
Are DBS checked
Have sometimes been helped by Home-Start themselves

Finding Hope Through Home-Visiting Support

Joshua and his family were referred to Home-Start in May 2024. Living in shared accommodation and caring for their young child with complex medical needs, they were struggling to balance work, caregiving, and emotional wellbeing. Joshua’s long commute without a driving license added to the stress, and their flat, up four flights of stairs, was unsuitable for their child’s needs.

We matched them with a Home-Visiting Volunteer who visited weekly for six months. The volunteer offered emotional support and practical help, especially to Joshua, who was often the main caregiver. He listened, helped carry their child and pushchair, and even accompanied them to medical appointments.

“It meant so much to have someone who listened, understood, and believed in me as a parent. I couldn’t ask for help, but Home-Start found me when I needed it most.”
